The Morristown East Hurricanes could muster only three hits Monday against visiting South Doyle, as the Cherokees showed why they are one of the top teams in the Inter Mountain Conference with a 9-1 victory at Sherwood Park.

South Doyle improved to 3-1 in IMAC play behind the arm of starting pitcher Blake Stansberry. The senior, who has signed with Middle Tennessee State, did not allow a hit in his five innings of work on the mound, and the Hurricanes (4-6, 0-5 IMAC) could not score until their final at-bats in the seventh inning.

Braden Jones, Cale Wolfenbarger and Jessie Tipton each had a hit for East, with Jones crossing the plate in the seventh to avoid the shutout.

Brett Browning ripped three hits and scored three runs for the Cherokees, while Conner Gregory added a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the win. Luke Scates also had a two-bagger and scored twice, while Stansberry helped his own cause by recording a base hit and scoring a run.

Ryan Lloyd allowed eight runs – five earned – on eight hits in six innings for the ‘Canes, while Aaron Rymer surrendered an earned run on one hit in an inning of action.

In the junior varsity game, East rallied for a 5-1 deficit with five runs in the fourth inning to win 6-5 over South Doyle.

Hayden Davis and Spencer Odom both had doubles in the win, while Trey Martin, Tipton, Jake Dent and Aaron Smith all added singles. Smith scored a pair of runs, and Odom, Martin, Davis, Smith and Seth Laughner all had an RBI in the victory.

Dent worked two scoreless innings on the mound in relief to get the win. Smith allowed five runs – two earned – on five hits in three innings as the starter.
