Thirty-five individuals received an early Valentine’s Day present as part of the Hawkins County Sheriff Office’s “Operation Be Mine.”

Early Tuesday morning, narcotics officers and sheriff’s deputies hit the road with warrants in hand to make 37 arrests on 40 indictments passed down last week by the Hawkins County grand jury.

The arrests are the result of an 18-month undercover investigation by the narcotics unit.

“I think it went very well,” said Chief Deputy Tony Allen following the round-up. The take-downs were done as teams consisting of at least two officers converged on areas throughout the county.

“Our main goal was for us to stay safe,” Allen explained. “A lot of these people want to protect their drugs and their money.”

Other than one brief foot pursuit, the arrests went smoothly and without a hitch.

Sheriff Ronnie Lawson credited his officers for their good work.

“They do an awesome job,” the sheriff said, adding that Tuesday morning’s round-up was “well organized and well planned.”

Allen said that 35 officers were involved in the arrests and five narcotics officers made all the buys, using undercover officers and confidential informants. They then did all of the paperwork which resulted in the grand jury indictments.

Operation Be Mine extended far beyond the county line. Allen said four suspects were being sought out of state. All of the arrests stem from offenses which occurred in Hawkins County.

In addition to the arrests, officers also seized weapons, ammunition and a large quantity of drug paraphernalia.
