Encore announces 2014 season lineup

Although the final show of Encore Theatrical Company’s seventh season, the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” does not open until November 29, the company announced its production lineup today for 2014.

As in years past, the program includes musicals, comedies and dramas to appeal to a wide variety of ages and interests.

“This past season was one of our most widely attended,” said Drew Ogle, managing director of Encore. “We are very excited to let our audiences know that next year will be even bigger, with both a full roster of mainstage shows and several special events.”

Encore will open the season by introducing a brand new comedy to the Lakeway Area,
“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.” Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk awards for Best New Play of 2013, this comedy tells the story of middle-aged Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia, who live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. However their peace is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twenty-something boy toy, Spike.

Next up will be “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” This hilarious and heartfelt musical comedy follows six young people in the throes of puberty as they vie for top honors in the title contest, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. At each performance, audience members are recruited to compete with the cast, spelling big laughs and fun for all.

The summer will bring one of Encore’s biggest shows yet to the stage, “Shrek: The Musical.”

Based on the Oscar winning film, Shrek is the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess. He is joined by a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits in this musical for the whole family.

The season turns serious in the fall when Encore will proudly present the Pulitzer Prize winning drama “August: Osage County.” One of the most bracing and critically acclaimed plays in Broadway history, August: Osage County is a portrait of the dysfunctional American family at its finest—and absolute worst. When the patriarch of the Weston clan disappears one hot summer night, the family reunites at the Oklahoma homestead, where long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed.

Encore will close the 2014 mainstage season with another holiday favorite, “A Christmas Carol.” This light-hearted, musical take on the Dickens classic features a beautiful score by Alan Menken, the composer of “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid.”

In addition to its mainstage shows, Encore will once again also be offering a roster of special events.

Following the success of this year’s “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” Encore will once again present a spring cabaret performance.

“This special fundraising event will offer good food, fine wine, and great entertainment in a club setting,” said Ogle.

Also returning in 2014 will be the Encore Masterworks series, where the company hosts a Broadway performer in Morristown to present a concert and masterclass.

Encore’s largest special event is perhaps its Young Stars show, the mainstage musical produced by and starring actors 18 years old and younger. Following the sold out performances of “The Little Mermaid” in 2012 and “Beauty and the Beast” in 2013, Encore is excited to be presenting another Disney classic next year, “Aladdin.”

Show dates, times, and locations will be announced as they become available. Season tickets for the 2014 season will go on sale Nov. 18 and can be purchased by calling 423-318-8331 or downloading the order form on Encore’s website at www.etcplays.org.
