Strong season ends for West soccer
Morristown West senior Megan Horner drives past the Farragut defense on Saturday night in Knoxville. The Lady Trojans saw their season end 3-0.
KNOXVILLE – One of the best and most promising seasons in Morristown West girl’s soccer program history came to an end Saturday night in a similar fashion to last year’s campaign – with a loss in the Class AAA Sectional round.
The Lady Trojans could not recapture their postseason magic after a penalty kick loss to Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett in the Region 1-AAA championship game, and the Farragut Lady Admirals scored three first half goals and held on for a 3-0 win to advance to next week’s state tournament in Murfreesboro.
The loss ended the season for West with a 17-3 record, a program best, and coach Jennifer Murphy said the loss on Thursday night and the feelings from the defeat carried over into Saturday’s game.
“It’s definitely not where we expected to end up right now,” Murphy said. “We’re still feeling the effects of Thursday night. I can’t lie about that. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this, but you can’t predict this thing.
“It’s been so hard the last 48 hours, and we have been on an emotional rollercoaster. It was very tough to go from the lowest low of our season with the loss in the regionals, then get up for a big game like this against a team that already beat us 3-nil. We played well in the second half, and we went out with our heads held high.”
It was the final game for seniors Ashley Foster, Megan Horner, Erin McGarel, Erika Long and Hannah Kinkead, and Murphy said they leave a big void in the program as they depart.
“I’m proud of the four that have been with me since they were freshmen, and we have big shoes to fill next year,” Murphy said. “It’s the most successful season we have ever had, so I really can’t complain.”
The two teams battled evenly for nearly 20 minutes of the first half until the Lady Admirals found the net on their third shot of the night.
After a scrum in front of the net on a centered pass by Farragut, Katie Beuerlein found herself with possession right in front of the goal’s mouth and booted it in for the opening tally of the game with 20:03 left in the half.
Nearly 10 minutes later, the Lady Admirals added their second goal of the game. West’s Erin McGarel booted a goal kick, but Farragut gained possession and used three sharp touches with Beuerlein centering to a streaking Katie Cloud for an easy goal and a 2-0 lead with 10:25 on the clock.
That appeared to be the halftime score until the Lady Admirals worked some magic in the closing seconds of the half. With the clock ticking away, Joanda Parchman found Cloud on a corner, and she headed it into the net with 2.8 seconds left in the frame for a 3-0 lead.
Farragut controlled possession for most of the second half, with West’s lone scoring opportunity coming in the 53rd minute when Erika Long’s direct kick from 25 yards away sailed over the crossbar.
The Lady Admirals got off seven shots in the second half of the game, with nothing more getting by Lady Trojan keeper Erin Murphy. Farragut outshot West 16-2 in the contest.
