Long headed to state meet
GRAY — The Grainger cross country teams both finished sixth in the Region 1-A/AA cross country meet ran at Daniel Boone High School on Thursday.
The Grizzlies totaled 156 points in the boy’s race, but Zach Long qualified for next week’s Class A/AA state meet in Nashville with a second place finish in a time of 16:07, 23 seconds behind overall winner Wesley Pectol of Greeneville.
Pectol’s finish helped the Greene Devils make the state event as a team with a third place finish at 82 points, behind University High (56) and Sullivan East (69).
Jared Coffman added a 28th place finish for Grainger, while Grant Sutton (35th), Cody Simpson (37th) and Tanner Steele (55th) closed out the team score.
In the girl’s race, the Lady Grizzlies had 155 points in the event for their sixth place finish. Greeneville won the race with a score of 34, followed by Sullivan East (61), University High (82), South Greene (114) and Unicoi County (154) in the top five.
Julia Atkins led Grainger with a 17th place finish, while Tori Moran was 23rd, Megan Adams was 40th, Emily Aarons was 41st and Elizabeth Escobales was 43rd to round out the team total.
