Despite improvements in detection and treatment, breast cancer remains a major killer among women.
The disease is the second most common cancer of women in the United States, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most of us know someone who is battling or has died from the disease.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and The Commercial Appeal is doing its part to heighten that awareness and to say that we, along with millions of others, support those who are battling breast cancer or have lost a wife, daughter, mother, cousin, aunt or friend to the disease. That’s why The CA is printed on pink paper today and why today’s newspaper features Memphis stories on how breast cancer has touched so many lives and how, often, stories of courage and inspiration rise from tragedy.
About 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be detected this year, according to the American Cancer Society, and there will be more than 39,620 deaths. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36.
The good news, according to the ACS, is that breast cancer rates are decreasing because of earlier detection and better treatment. There are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. October is the month to congratulate those survivors and to remind women about the importance of early detection.
