Playing their first home match in nearly two weeks, the Walters State Lady Senators made quick work of the visiting Maryville College JV Lady Scots inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.
The Lady Senators jumped way ahead in each of the first two games before rallying in the third for a 25-17, 25-17 and 25-23 win to improve their home record to 5-1 on the year.
With the win, Walters State has won four of their last six matches overall to improve to 10-7 on the season.
“I thought we played pretty well for the most part in the first two games, and we did a good job closing it out in the third after coming from behind,” Lady Senators coach Jasmin Coleman said. “Megan Blaylock really did a great job for us tonight like she has all year. She’s our leader, and when we needed a play tonight, she made it.”
Walters State got off to a fast start behind the play of Blaylock. The sophomore smacked a pair of kills to help open a 7-2 lead, but the Lady Scots rallied to knot the score at 12 on the strength of two aces from Mary Cate Howard.
The Lady Senators reclaimed the lead on another kill by Blaylock, and Alexis Whitehead added a block to push the lead to 21-16. Emily Lowe recorded an ace before Blaylock had another kill to end the first game, 25-17.
Maryville scored the opening point of the second game before Taylor Rymer recorded an ace and Heather Ottinger got a tip to fall to give Walters State a 4-1 lead. The Lady Scots pulled within 6-5, but the Lady Senators got on a roll on the serve of Lowe.
The freshman rolled off 10 straight points on serve, with Whitehead having a block and a tip and Blaylock adding three kills to help push the margin to 20-6. The Lady Scots cut it to 22-16, but Blaylock ended the game with another spike, 25-17.
After the Lady Senators scored the first three points of the third game, Maryville scored six straight points on the serve of Howard. She had an ace to help give the Lady Scots a 6-3 lead, but Walters State stormed back.
Blaylock ended the slide with a kill, and Ottinger added a block to tie it. The Lady Senators put together a 6-1 run to take a 12-9 lead, but Maryville continued to hang around.
The Lady Scots fought back and tied it at 14 before Ottinger smashed a kill to give Walters State the lead back. Maryville responded by scoring seven of the next 11 points to claim a 21-19 advantage.
The Lady Senators clawed back and took a 23-22 lead after a kill and tip from Ashley Stanifer, but the Lady Scots tied it on a kill by Abrianna Jones. Walters State ended it two points later, as Maryville could not return a hard serve from Rymer to end the match, 25-23.
Blaylock had 16 kills to lead WSCC in the win, while Lowe had 18 service points, 10 digs and three aces. Rymer tallied 12 assists and had three aces as well in the win.
