LHMS, MRBC to host blood drive to aid in raising funds for teacher’s husband
Lincoln Heights Middle School and Medic Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive on behalf of a teacher at the school and her husband on Tuesday, April 30, in the school’s gym.
Steffen Kielau is the husband of LHMS English language teacher Patisa Kielau.
When the ELL teacher found out her husband had cancer, school officials said many folks stepped in to help the family in whatever way they could, including providing meals, babysitting services, monetary donations, disinfecting wipes, prayers and encouragement.
“We are so thankful for all that you have done for us, and I would like to use that support to reach out into our community,” Kielau said.
“Nobody knows when something catastrophic will happen to them personally or someone they love,” she explained, “so I want to have a blood drive so others can be helped if something happens to them.”
Kielau said one in five people will need a transfusion during their lifetime, and hospitals often have shortages.
Officials said most people in general good health can donate blood, but there is a health screening before blood can be taken to check health indicators such as blood pressure and iron levels.
Whole blood donations are divided into components, so one donation can aid as many as three people.
Those interested in donating blood at a specific time during the drive can email Kielau at email@example.com.
