Cabrera, Silva lead Smokies to 5-3 victory
KODAK — Rubi Silva homered in the sixth inning and hit an RBI-triple in the seventh and led the Tennessee Smokies (13-9) to a 5-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (9-12) Friday Night at Smokies Park. Silva finished the game going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Trailing 1-0, the Smokies broke through against Pensacola starter Daniel Renken (1-2) in the fourth inning. Ty Wright and Jae-Hoon Ha hit back-to-back singles and Wright scored on an error by Blue Wahoos’ shortstop Devin Lohman. Two batters later, Ha came around to score on a single by Rafael Lopez to give the Smokies a 2-1 lead.
Tennessee starter Alberto Cabrera (3-1) kept the Blue Wahoos’ bats in check, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out six over his six innings of work.
Following a leadoff single by Ha in the sixth, Silva hit his fourth home run of the season putting the Smokies ahead 4-1.
Cabrera gave way to the Smokies bullpen and after reliever Kevin Rhoderick allowed runners to get to first and third, Manager Buddy Bailey called on A.J. Morris, who allowed a single to Theo Bowe to score a run and narrow Pensacola’s gap, 4-2.
Tennessee answered right back in the seventh as Silva continued his hot hitting by taking the ball for a ride to deep center and winding up on third base with an RBI-triple to score Ha from second.
With the score 5-3, Trey McNutt closed the door on the Blue Wahoos, getting the final four outs, notching his second save of the season.
The Smokies stole two more bases on the night, giving them 33 on the season, which leads the Southern League. Christian Villanueva swiped his second of the season and Ha stole his sixth.
Pensacola manager Delino DeShields was ejected in the fourth inning by first base umpire Matt McCoy for arguing an appeal play at first base.
