The Morristown West tennis teams split their contest with Greeneville Thursday afternoon at Frank Lorino Park. The Lady Trojans rolled to a 7-2 victory, but the boys suffered their second 5-4 defeat in a row.

The most drama was found in the boy’s contest. West picked up singles victories from Nolan Sexton, Garrett Rines and D.J. Gibson at the numbers four, five and six positions. Greeneville secured wins at one, two and three singles. The most notable singles match was at number one where Greeneville’s Jaspal Mahal faced West’s Parker Ashford. Mahal, a state singles semifinalist in 2012, survived a furious comeback from Ashford to prevail 8-6. After singles play, the overall score was tied at 3.

Greeneville took a 4-3 lead when the doubles team of Mahal and Blair outlasted West’s Ashford and Jared Reed 8-5. The Trojans countered when Jay Inman and Sexton won by the same score over Greeneville’s Leonard and Dickenson to tie the overall score at 4.

Just like Tuesday night at South-Doyle, the Trojans found themselves in the position of needing to win the last match of the day to pull out a victory. On court number three, the West doubles team of Rines and Gibson were in a battle with Snelson and Cawood of Greeneville. Facing a 7-2 deficit, Rines and Gibson saved a match point and used the momentum to reel off three straight games to cut Greeneville’s lead to 7-5. Greeneville responded by serving out the match to win 8-5 resulting in a 5-4 team victory.

In the girl’s contest, West jumped on Greeneville 4-0 when Rachel Ramsey, Aliea Williams, Catherine Cook and Maggie Cook all posted singles victories. Greeneville countered with victories at five and six singles. At the end of singles play, the score was 4-2 in favor of the Lady Trojans.

The West girls made quick work of Greeneville in doubles. All three doubles teams were winners. The teams of Ramsey/ Williams, Cook/Cook, and Hannah Beth Moorhouse and Danielle McNabney accounted for the victories making the final score 7-2.

The Lady Trojans move to 7-2, while the Trojans fall to 6-3. West hosts Sevier County Monday at Frank Lorino on student spirit day. West High students will enjoy free pizza and other giveaways for their support of the tennis program.
