West tennis sweeps Jefferson County after exciting finish
JEFFERSON CITY — The Morristown West girl’s tennis team defeated the Jefferson County girls in dramatic fashion Monday afternoon at the Carson Newman courts.
The Lady Trojans held a 4-2 lead after singles with Rachel Ramsey, Aliea Williams, Catherine Cook, and Hannah Beth Moorhouse securing wins. With all three doubles left to play, Morristown West needed to win just one of those matches to clinch the match. Facing a big challenge, the Jefferson County number two doubles team of Gentry/Blankenship rallied from a 6-4 deficit to win 9-7 over Maggie Cook and Catherine Cook making the overall score 4-3 in favor of Morristown West. Then, at number three doubles, Jefferson County’s Henry and Collins defeated Ana Langlois and Moorhouse, 8-4.
With the overall score tied at 4, all eyes turned to the last match on the courts as the number one doubles teams of Rachel Ramsey/Aliea Williams of West battled Shirley/ Newman of Jefferson County. Facing a 6-3 deficit and a vocal crowd behind both teams, the West girls made their run, first tying the score at 6, then falling behind again 7-6. The Lady Trojans won the last three games in a row to win 9-7, giving the West a thrilling 5-4 victory. The win keeps the Lady Trojans undefeated in IMAC play since 2008.
The Morristown West Trojans rolled to an 8-1 victory over Jefferson County. Jared Reed, Jay Inman, Nolan Sexton, Garrett Rines, and DJ Gibson picked up singles wins. Parker Ashford suffered his first conference loss as a Trojan falling to Jefferson County’s Caleb Smith by a score of 8-5.
Doubles winners for the Trojans included Ashford/Reed, Inman/ Sexton, and Rines/Gibson. The most exciting doubles match of the day was at number one doubles where Ashford and Reed fell behind 7-4 before saving four match points en route to a come-from-behind 9-7 victory.
Morristown West improves to 4-0 in IMAC play and 4-1 overall. The Trojans will meet cross town rival Morristown East this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Frank Lorino Park.
