A Morristown woman who authorities say disciplined her girlfriend’s 4-year-old son by giving him a cold bath and shower and then placing him outside naked in cold weather pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse Wednesday afternoon.
Jessie Danielle Tyler, 26, accepted a plea agreement that provides for a 15-year prison term. Criminal Court Judge John F. Dugger Jr. told Tyler she has no chance of leaving prison before serving 85 percent of her sentence.
Tyler was babysitting the 4-year-old son of Lone Oak Drive resident Jacqueline Boyd on Dec. 22, 2010 while Boyd was working at a Morristown grocery store, according to Assistant District Attorney General Kim Morrison.
The cold shower and bath, and being left out in the cold was a form of punishment, according to the prosecutor, who says the child’s core temperature was 83 degrees when paramedics arrived.
The lead investigator in the case, Detective Sgt. Vicki Arnold with the Morristown Police Department, said this morning she believes Tyler was angry because she didn’t want to babysit her girlfriend’s child.
The child also had bruises on his face and head. Boyd was initially charged with aggravated child abuse and child neglect, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Boyd first told police her son bangs his head on the wall when he is angry and is generally clumsy.
The child made a full recovery. He now lives with his grandmother in Florida, according to Arnold.
