ETHEL MARIE ATKINS

Mrs. Ethel Marie Atkins of Thorn Hill, was born Nov. 23, 1949 and passed away March 10, 2013 at UT Hospital in Knoxville. She was a graduate of Claiborne County High School, employee of By-Lo Markets for 38 years. She was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church in Grainger County. She loved her grandchildren, gardening and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Rutha Breeding Taylor; brothers, Ray and Bob Taylor and two infant sisters.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Clarence (Chunk) Atkins of Thorn Hill; sons and wives: Earl and Charlene Atkins, Eddie Ray and Kristy Atkins, David and Christy Atkins; special grandsons, Ethan and Spencer; special great-grandson, Cayson Setsor; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Spence of Thorn Hill, Louise (Charles) Jarnigan of Tazewell; sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Jean Taylor of Morristown; brothers, Alf (Irene) Taylor of Tazewell, Fred (Tina) Taylor of Thorn Hill, Paul (Barbara) Taylor of Tazewell, Roy (Kim) Taylor of Knoxville, Shirley (Josie) Taylor of Michigan, Bruce (Bobby) Taylor of Michigan; special friend, Katherine Brantley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell. Funeral service will be officiated by the Rev. Curt Reed and the Rev. Ira C. Dalton at 2 p.m. Thursday March 14 at Coffey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in the Atkins Cemetery at Broken Valley. Singers will be the Rev. Fred Reed Family

Pallbearers will be Roy Lynn Taylor, Keith Collins, Joey Coffey, Tim Spencer, Gary Wayne Singleton and Tony Atkins. With honorary pallbearers, Greg Jarnigan and Pat Taylor.

Raymond Blanken, age 64, of Bybee, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013.

SARAH GOLDIE DEPEW

Sarah Goldie Depew, age 84, of Morristown, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2013. She was a member of Swan Creek Primitive Church.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved going to church as long as her health permitted. She sang in many churches and funerals. She loved to sing the songs on Zion. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dana Brewer and John Depew; daughter, Linda Elliott; her parents, Lon and Addie Lawson; brother, John Lawson and sisters, Helen Lawson, Stella Royston and Nina Trent

She is survived by granddaughter; Kimberly (Dwayne) Davis; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Davis, who was very special; step-daughters, Mary Ruth Wyatt, Linda Kayscott and Loretta Williams; sisters, Margaret Purkey, Imogene Lane, Faye (Jack) Ferrell, Wanda (Porter) Carroll and Brenda (Rick) Anderson; brother; Carl (Bessie) Lawson.

Special thanks to Tabitha Davis and the staff of Covenant Hospice, special nieces for their kindness, Phyllis and Jeff Wintead, Helen and David Stuffle, Precilla Carroll. Special friends and neighbors for their kindness, Bonnie Lamb, Kay Wittaker, Wanda Spencer, Doyle O’Dell and Carter Hager.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at the McNeil Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Porter Carroll, the Rev. Tommy Seal and the Rev. J.R. South officiating.

Special music will be provided by the Davis Brothers

Interment will follow in the Swan Creek Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Winstead, Danny Carroll, Rick Anderson, Doyle O’Dell, Jack Ferrell and Tommy Long

Peggy Jean Miller, age 72, of Morristown, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, after a lengthy illness, at the home of her sister, Donna (Terry) Patterson. She was an avid lover and friend of animals and also a kind and loving friend to anyone who was in need of her assistance.

She was preceded in death by her husband,  Emmitt L. Miller; son, Ricky Collins; parents, Arthur B. Turner Sr. and Fairy Belle Turner; and two brothers, Arthur B. Turner Jr. and Donald “Tom” Turner.

She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Dale) Dearing; sisters, Donna (Terry) Patterson, Mary (Robert) Long, Betty Cutshall, Carolyn Ratliff, and Patricia “Judy” Drinnon; three grandchildren, Eddie Dearing, Chris Dearing and Kristie Collins; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Johnson and Staff, Amedisys Home Health, Amedisys Hospice Home Health and former caregivers, Renee Greene, Jerry Hurst and Ruth Marshall for their loving care.

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at Westside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Greene and Chaplin Don Price officiating. Family and friends will gather at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Hamblen Memory Gardens for an 11 a.m. graveside service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jewel Minor, age 90, of Morristown, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Minor; son, Marcus Wayne Minor; parents, Coy and Sallie Trent; and sisters, Berdene Crews and Lorene Minor.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie (Ed) McMurtury; grandchildren, Johnny (Terry) McMurtury and Michael (Ann) McMurtury; great-grandchildren, Shane Hopkins, Eric Hopkins, Kara (Josh) Miller, Brandon (Tara) McMurtury and Tiffany (Ray) McDonald and Jessie Trent; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Madge Brooks, Willa Jean Ayers of Carterville, Ga., and Joann (Neal) Silver of Jefferson City; brother, Coy Lynn (Helen) Trent; and several nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Westside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Livesay officiating. Family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14 at Hamblen Memory Gardens for graveside services. Mary Morgan, 95, of Morristown passed away Monday, March 11, 2013 at The Heritage Center.

Mr. Toby F. Pearson Sr., 84, one of three children born to the late Mrs. Pauline Pearson Mack, departed this life Friday, March 8, 2013 at Lakeway Regional Hospital. He was a long time, faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and Lay Leader. 

Toby received his early education in the Morristown Public School System, attending Judson S. Hill Elementary School, Morristown College High School and Morristown College. Always a person with a voracious appetite for reading, and with a thirst for knowledge, Toby decided to continue his education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he received his B.S. Degree. He further extended his educational pursuit at North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., earning a Masters Degree in Public Health Administration. He also attended the Illinois School of Podiatry in Chicago, Ill. 

Toby was a pillar in his community and a strong and forceful advocate for the poor and disenfranchised. To help facilitate his passion for community service, Toby was active in countless civic and professional organizations during his long career.  A partial list of his many areas of service includes: Equal Opportunity Officer, Douglass Cherokee Economic Authority, for more than 40 years; Coordinator, Hamblen County Neighborhood Service Center; Founder, Progressive Child Development Center of Morristown; Established the East Tennessee Business League, Inc., later known as the Progressive Business League; Man Power Director; Charter President, Optimist Club of Uptown Morristown; Member, Board of Directors, Greater Knoxville Urban League; Veteran, United States Army, Honorable Discharge.

Toby was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Yvonne Pearson; and two brothers, Glen Edward Pearson and Dr. Charles H. Pearson.

Toby was also honored for his years of public service with the Community Service Award from the “Africa to Appalachia” Foundation.

Toby unselfishly loved his family, both immediate and extended. To cherish his memory, he leaves behind his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara J. Pearson of Morristown; his son, Toby F. Pearson Jr. (Tera) of Atlanta, Ga.; a loving granddaughter, Deitra P. Myers of Morristown; nephew, Dr. Darryl H. Pearson, M.D., of Charlotte, N.C.; niece, Dr. Pamela Z.  Pearson, D.D.S., of Charlotte, N.C.; cousins, Mrs. Charleslene Yarborough (Joe) of Charlotte, N.C., Mr. Carl E. Hilton (Alice) of Louisville, Ky.; special cousins, Billy Pearson of Cambridge, Mass. and James Pearson  of Morristown.  He is also survived by devoted friends and extended family members Lynn and Pamela Collins, also of Morristown.

A celebration of the life of Mr. Toby F. Pearson Sr. will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Morristown, with the Rev. Edwin Cunningham officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. at the church the day of the service.

Louise G. Smith, age 88, of White Pine, peacefully went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2013 in Newport News, Va.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at Westside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Manning and the Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14 at Hamblen Memory Gardens for graveside services.
