Senators finish fifth at Tusculum Invitational

GREENEVILLE — The fourth ranked Walters State golf team ended their first tournament of the spring schedule with a fifth place finish in the 18-team Tusculum Invitational played at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville.

The Senators followed up their opening round total of 291 by firing an 8-over par 292 in the final round to total 583 (15-over par) for the event. Lincoln Memorial, the opening round leader, won the event with a two-day score of 574.

Milligan finished second at 579, followed by host Tusculum (580), Carson-Newman (581), Walters State, Tennessee Wesleyan (584), Anderson (593), Limestone (597), Virginia Intermont (601) and Mars Hill (602) in the top 10.

Walters State was the highest finishing junior college team in the event by 20 shots over USC Lancaster and 21 shots over Spartanburg Methodist.

Brad Hawkins and Ryne Thompson paced the Senators with a two-day score of 143, as Hawkins followed his opening 70 with a second round 73 while Thompson shot a 73 then a final round 70 to finish in a tie for ninth place.

Cody Johnson added a 147 (74-73) to end up tied for 24th. Chase Atkins fired a 150 (74-76) that put him in a tie for 38th, and Will Wright shot a 154 (75-79) to end up tied for 60th.

Walters State also had two individuals participate, with Andrew Hall ending the event tied for 18th at 145 (72-73) while Cory Martin shot a 156 (76-80) to tied for 68th place.

The Senators will return to the links Thursday when they take part in the Spring Fling at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, Ala., on the site of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The 54-hole event will run through Saturday.
