Kalynn Shiflet and Madison Smerdel have been selected Girls of the Month for January by Girls Incorporated of Hamblen County.
They were selected based on their participation in activities, their character, attitude and because they would make good role models for other girls.
Kalynn is 7 years old and is the daughter of Keisha and Michael Shiflet. She has one brother, who is 4 months old.
Kalynn attends Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
She is in the second grade at Union Heights Elementary School, where her favorite subject is science. Her school awards are the friendliest helper and second place in the coloring contest.
What she enjoys most about school is learning, and that she gets to play with her friends.
She has been a member of Girls Inc. for a year and a half. Her favorite activities at Girls Inc. are leggos, painting, and playing pool.
Kalynn’s hobbies and are upward basketball, coach pitch softball, reading Junie B. Jones and Judy Moody books and playing with her brother and cousins.
Kaylnn wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Kalynn is a very smart and beautiful girl. Her parents are very proud of her for this accomplishment.
Madison is 9 years old and is the daughter of Matt and Christie Smerdel. She has a brother named Phoenix, who is 3 years old.
She attends Abundant Love Ministries and Loving Grace Fellowship.
Madison is in the 3rd grade at Alpha Elementary School, where her favorite subject is reading.
Her school award is the National Fitness Award. What she likes most about school is making friends.
She has been a member of Girls Inc. for four years. Her favorite activities at Girls Inc. are sewing and Girl Scouts.
Her hobbies are basketball for the Hot Shots, reading and Girl Scouts.
Madison is an extremely outgoing and incredibly friendly child. She is very thoughtful and caring.
She is a wonderful daughter and extremely bright. She is a wonderful big sister and a joy to be around. Her mom and dad are very proud of her.
Madison wants to be a singer or a fashion designer when she grows up.
