TRH kicks off wellness education with ‘Heart Healthy Tips for 2013’

A new wellness education series at Takoma Regional Hospital will kick off with a lunchtime lecture on “Heart Healthy Tips for 2013″ on Monday, Feb. 11.

The event, held in observance of American Heart Month in February, will focus on foods that improve heart health, according to Takoma dietitian Joanie Scott.

“Heart disease is the number one cause of death in Greene County,” Scott said. “We’ll talk about what foods are heart healthy — and tasty, too.”

The lecture, hosted by the hospital’s diabetes support group, will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in Takoma’s Volunteer Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

“I will offer food samples of lower fat, higher fiber foods,” Scott explained. “We will also discuss the importance of reading food labels.”

The new wellness education series evolved from the hospital’s long-standing diabetes support group.

“We have featured diabetes’ topics for many months now and wanted to broaden the scope for our participants,” said Louisa Hammer, Takoma’s certified diabetic educator. “Diabetics are interested in many topics, not just those relating to diabetes. This new focus also will open up the meetings to non-diabetics who are wanting to learn more about wellness during their lunch hour.”

For more information, call Louisa Hammer at 423-636-0308. Reservations are requested. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.
