The Moscow Boys Choir to be hosted at Niswonger Performing Arts Center
GREENEVILLE – The Moscow Boys Choir will offer a unique Christmas experience, with a stop on its 2012 “Christmas Around the World Tour” at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12.
Founded in 1957, the choir is Russia’s most prestigious allboys choir. Handpicked from more than 400 students, the talented youngsters traditionally begin their life in music as early as age five, but are not allowed to perform for audiences until age nine.
The Moscow Boys Choir has toured Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Scandinavia, South Korea, and Japan. 2012 marks their twelfth North American Tour and the choir will visit more than 11 states in the U. S. and perform their very first concerts in New Brunswick, Canada on this tour.
In addition to being a concert, the program will be an entertaining history lesson whereby the audience members learn about traditions in several countries.
In Germany, the Christmas holiday technically begins on Dec. 6 and is celebrated throughout the entire month. The center of a traditional German holiday is the Christmas tree. It is said that the idea of raising and décorating a tree for Christmas comes out of Germany and décorations were originally homemade trinkets or even fruit and cookies.
The choir will sing “O! Tannenbaum” in a nod to these German Christmas traditions. The choir also performs the perennial favorite “Silent Night,” which was first performed by a choir to the accompaniment of a guitar.
“We felt that it was important to offer a program for families during this special time of the year. Student tickets are only $10 and adults are $20,” said Darrell Bryan, NPAC Executive Director.
For keepsakes, NPAC will be making pictures that night with children and/or their families at the Christmas tree. The pictures will be made available free of charge by e-mail.
For ticketing information, call the NPAC Box Office at 423-638-1679 (Open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday). NPAC is located adjacent to Greeneville High School at 212 Tusculum Blvd. For more information, visit www. greenevillenpac.com.
