Encore bringing Christmas classic to Lakeway Area

Encore Theatrical Company will usher in the Christmas season with the holiday classic, “Miracle on 34th Street.” The heartwarming play opens Friday, Nov. 23 and plays for two weekends at Walters State Community College in Morristown.

“Miracle on 34th Street” tells the story of a man named Kris Kringle, claiming to be the real Santa Claus. Despite the town’s disbelief, one young girl has confidence that he is indeed telling the truth. Her campaign to convince others of Kris’s real identity teaches the town about faith, truth, and Christmas spirit.

‘”Miracle on 34th Street’ is one of my favorite Christmas movies,” said Frank Williams, Encore’s technical director, who also served as the stage director for this production.

“Seeing it come to life on stage, in the hands of these talented actors, has been a great way to start the holiday season.”

Making his Encore debut in the role of Kris Kringle is Gregg Harrell, an actor who has been seen on stages across East Tennessee for many years. After winning the role at the auditions in October, Harrell immediately went to work growing out his beard for authenticity.

Harrell leads a cast of more than 20 actors ranging in age from 6 to 60 (plus). One of the younger cast members, Katie Haun, is also making her Encore debut in the lead role of the girl who believes in Santa Claus.

Although “Miracle on 34th Street” is not a musical, Williams felt it was important to include holiday tunes and other surprises in the production. Audiences can look forward to carolers, elves, and many other treats throughout the evening.

“Miracle on 34th Street” is the final production of Encore’s 6th season. Financial support was provided by the Citizen Tribune, Pete and Sami Barile, Lakeway Regional Hospital, WCRK, MUS/Fibernet and Encore’s producing partner, Walters State Community College.

The show opens Friday, Nov. 23 and plays for two weekends. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m.

There is a special additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Dec. 1. Audiences attending opening night will be treated to a special reception with the cast and crew after the show.

Tickets are available on the Encore website at www.etcplays.org or by calling 423-318-8331.
