Celebrating afterschool programs with Lights On

Thursday evening, hundreds of Hamblen County students and parents participated in the 15th annual Lights On Afterschool program, which is a nationwide celebration of afterschool programs. Nichole Smith, with the Douglas-Cherokee Education Center, said the festivities at Union Heights Elementary School were among more than 9,000 held across the nation. The program included activities that normally take place within local afterschool programs including service learning opportunities, science activities and refreshments.

Traffic signal coordination project set to begin

After many months of planning, the grant-funded $1.42 million traffic signal-coordination project on East Morris Boulevard and West Andrew Johnson Highway will begin in the coming weeks, city officials say. The Morristown City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to award the contract to Nashville-based Stansell Electric Company.     Unemployment rates across the Lakeway Area continue to fall, dropping to an average of 7.98 percent in September. Unemployment rates in August were at 8.8 percent and were 9.3 percent in July. While rates dropped in every county in the Lakeway Area, they are still high in Hancock County which fell to 10.3 percent in September from 11.3 percent in August.     A habitual Morristown scofflaw with a three-page rap sheet was jailed again Wednesday for his alleged most elaborate charged offense to date, authorities say.
