JRT Presents Halloween Thrills and Chills with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Adding chills and a few giggles to Jonesborough’s Halloween activities, JRT presents The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, running from Oct. 26 to Nov. 4. Join Ichabod Crane and the residents of Sleepy Hollow in the rites of autumn through this magically haunting show for all ages just in time for Halloween.
This adaptation of Washington Irving’s classic story follows new schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane as he competes with Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt to woo the most eligible bachelorette in town, Katrina Van Tassel. Considered a superstitious schoolmaster with an overactive imagination, all comes to a climax as Ichabod leaves a party and is chased by the Headless Horseman. What happens afterwards, nobody knows. This classic tale is both told and performed by Ben Bolt, Shelley Bolt, Lorianne Carver, Ricky Pentland and Lucas Schmidt.
“This version is not done in the dark, spine tingling style of Tim Burton,” commented director Janette Gaines. “While there are some intense moments, it’s overall a comedy. It highlights the hilariously funny side of these Sleepy Hollow characters. That and the fact that it is a one act (approx. 1 hour) make it a great show for both younger and older audiences.”
Lucas Schmidt (Ichabod Crane) added, “I’ve always liked the story. I grew up watching the animated movie. When the director encouraged me to audition for it, I did.”
“Ichabod is a lanky tall person and I am too; I thought it would be fun to try out,” Schmidt said. “There’s a lot of physical comedy for my character, which I love. Plus my cast mates are great and the directors are wonderful to work with.”
Performances will be on Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Oct. 28 show will be interpreted for the Deaf. Tickets are $14 general admission and $12 for students and seniors. To purchase tickets, call the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or visit online at www.jonesboroughtheatre.com.
