Marble Springs Stargazing Workshop to Feature a Rare Celestial Event.
Join us on June 5, 2012 at Marble Springs State Historic Site for a special Stargazing Workshop conducted by Garry Noland, adjunct instructor of Astronomy at the University of Tennessee.
On June 5th, 2012 Venus, the brightest of planets, will pass in front of the sun to stage a transit of Venus, one of the rarest predictable astronomical phenomena. This upcoming transit will be the last one for the 21st century. During the transit, Venus will appear in silhouette as a small, dark dot moving in front of the sun. This rare astronomical event will not happen again until December 11, 2117.
The Transit of Venus stargazing workshop will take place Tuesday, June 5, 2012 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. View this rare event through a special telescope provided by Mr. Noland. Note: proper eye protection is absolutely essential for watching a transit of Venus, else you risk blindness or permanent eye damage.
Fee: $1 suggested donation.
The event takes place at the Marble Springs State Historic Site located at 1220 West Governor John Sevier Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.
