The Rose Service Guild will host an opening reception for its April exhibit on Friday, March 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.  Rose Center is located at 442 W. Second North St. in Morristown. For more information, call 423-581-4330 or visit www.RoseCenter.org or the center’s Facebook page.

“On The Rocks,” an exhibit of original oil paintings by Bill Long of Morristown, will remain on display through April 28.

The title of the exhibit comes from a common subject of his paintings: the beautiful wildness of the rocks and forest detritus found in much of East Tennessee. Long generally works on a very large scale, which makes viewers feel as if they could reach out and touch the items in the paintings. He has a subtle use of light and shadow as well as color.

Long was born in Morristown and raised in Apopka, Fla. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a focus in painting in 1974 from the University of Tennessee. Long continued his painting until the time came to raise a family and then a successful sign company took most of his time.

Long’s work has been recently exhibited in regional and national group exhibitions. Galleries that have shown his work include Hanson Gallery in Knoxville, Gallery 1401 in Chattanooga and The Haen Gallery in Asheville, N.C.

The series of paintings at Rose Center represents nearly three years of studio work.

“They are about capturing and expressing my interaction with the natural world,” Long said. “Sometimes it’s not just a visual thing, instead it’s a feeling about a particular subject matter that results in a more abstract rendering.”
