The Hamblen County Substance Abuse Coalition, in partnership with Knoxville-based cultural arts foundation, Fuentes, will host a youth community art mural project. Opportunities for 15 area youth, ages 10-18, will allow these youth to create a 5’ X 30’ mural with a drug and alcohol prevention theme at the HCSAC Classroom facility located at 188 West Main Street, Morristown.
Fuentes has brought in professional artists from Honduras, Mexico and other Hispanic cultures that will be teaching the youth as they create this mural. Classes will convene on Saturdays, January 18 and 25 and February 1, 2014 from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
Executive Director, Paul Hyde said, “We have a large Hispanic population in our community and we want to bring some recognition to this culture in our county. Bringing art to our county with themes surrounding preventing substance abuse is a great fit and we are looking forward to working a lot with Fuentes in the future.”
The HCSAC has plans to host a Youth Art Show and Auction, with a theme of “Better Things to do Than Drugs” in the fall of 2014.
There is a $30.00 fee for this project which covers supplies, instruction from professional artists and lunch for all three Saturdays. Contact the HCSAC at (423) 748-7494 to register youth for this project. Only 15 youth will be accepted for this project. A few scholarships are available for this project.
