Great Smoky Mtns. Heritage Center Holiday Homecoming

TOWNSEND - Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center will host its third annual Holiday Homecoming on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4  p.m. with free admission for all on this date.

The event, designed especially for families, is made possible through generosity of the East Tennessee Foundation.

The Center experience includes the movie “Peace of Ground” and self-guided tours of two galleries and 12 historic outbuildings, as well as special programs just for the homecoming.

Santa Claus will make a special appearance at Holiday Homecoming from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Also on hand – “Kids on the Block” Puppet Show, an educational service of Child & Family Tennessee in Knoxville that uses child-sized puppets to teach children about important topics such as abuse, bullying, nutrition and drug prevention. For this event, topics will include “Diversity” (holiday-themed) and “Safety.” Parents are encouraged to attend the 10:30, 11:30 or 12:30 shows with their children.

Music in the Center’s auditorium throughout the day includes performances by the Knoxville Area Dulcimer Club; theSmoky Mountain Flute Circle; The Woodpickers; the Rejoice! Choir fromKnoxville; the Mountain Shadow String Band; and the Spurgeon Boys.

 Children will have the opportunity to make, and take home, button whizzers, paper angels, a pine cone decoration, a quilting ornament, and a sweet gum ball ornament (substitutions may be made.)

Historic demonstrations are scheduled all day and include basket making, corn husk dolls, woodcarving, and making fudge over the open hearth.
