In a Sept. 12 lecture based on his new book, Rebels on the Border, Dr. Aaron Astor will discuss the Civil War experience in the highly contested and bloodiest of border states, Kentucky and Missouri.  Following the war, former slaves transformed their kin and social networks of resistance against slavery into securing electoral participation and building institutions, thus prompting a violent white reaction that resulted in a political realignment of Kentucky Bluegrass and “Little Dixie” Unionists with Missouri Confederates to stifle the political ambitions of former slaves.  Aaron Astor is an associate professor of history at Maryville College.

The program is free and open to the public.  The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville.  Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture.  Soft drinks will be available.  For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit the website at www.EastTNHistory.org.
